The project looks at what was a passing trend and what still has staying power among virtual influencers.

Influentes is a research guide to virtual influencers: characters with a public digital presence, created with 3D animation, computer graphics, image compositing, or artificial intelligence. The project brings together twelve examples and examines what has lost momentum, what was a passing novelty, and what shows signs of continuity. This is an editorial analysis, not a popularity ranking.

For people who create content, the guide helps them consider an identity that audiences can recognize and have a reason to follow. A distinctive look can attract attention, but humor, usefulness, stories, music, or a sense of connection can also bring people back. The project points out that characters made with artificial intelligence are not necessarily autonomous: people choose their topics, images, words, and partnerships.

To get started, try replacing “what should my character look like?” with “why would someone follow this character?” The guide includes a practical character worksheet and sources for studying the examples. Look for recent activity, and check whether the evidence relates to audience, commercial use, or creative continuity; these are different things.
