historia-timelapse: two formats, made in minutes or with real light and shadows

The project offers a standard format made in minutes and another with real light and shadows processed on the GPU.

historia-timelapse is a set of scripts that turns a city’s history into a 3D video. The map uses real terrain and OpenStreetMap buildings, which appear according to the year each neighborhood began to be settled. The timeline also shows the population, and historical events come with cards explaining them and citing a source. Examples include cities such as Porto Alegre and Florianópolis.

The standard format creates a video in minutes and is suited to making and reviewing a visual history of a city. There is also an optional real lighting version: it processes the terrain and buildings on the GPU, with shadows between buildings and a model-like appearance. The script, cards, and effects stay the same; only the lighting changes. This option takes longer to render and can be used as a featured version after the standard format is approved.

To get started, you need a Linux computer with a graphics card, Python, Node, and ffmpeg, as well as historical research about the city. The guide explains how to configure the map, download public data, prepare buildings and terrain, assemble the script, and check a few frames before rendering the full video. Note that the real lighting version is optional and requires an NVIDIA GPU; without Vulkan support, the standard format can use GL, with slower rendering.
