SmartView is a text-based model for assessing whether a digital product explains itself. It can be used to review an existing system, app, or website, or as part of the requirements document for something still being built. The model asks questions about buttons, fields, and screens, as well as tests that assess the product as a whole. At the end, it combines the results into a score with a number, letter, and color, along with a short list of what to fix or remove.
The assessment helps identify where a new user might not understand what the product does or how to reach its value. For an existing system, it guides a diagnosis and a short plan of fixes. For a product in development, the tests help determine whether it is worth building and turn the intended experience into requirements that can be checked. The aim is to reduce confusion and unnecessary steps for users.
To get started, write the product’s promise in one line and see whether someone unfamiliar with it understands the first screen in five seconds. Then go through the system as a new user: note how long the screen takes to respond, when the first useful result appears, and whether it asks for an email or login before that. It is also useful to check whether labels explain the action, whether the waiting screen shows what is happening, and whether each element would be missed if removed.
