How China teaches responsible AI use in schools

The guide brings together plans, class hours by province, and rules for AI use in Chinese schools, with critical reading and a comparison with the US.

The report explains how China organizes artificial intelligence education, from primary schools to universities and other groups in society. The central government sets guidelines, but each province or city decides how many class hours to offer. As a result, there is no single number of hours for the whole country. Beijing, for example, requires at least eight hours a year in every grade.

For students, learning can progress from first contact with AI to creating projects. The rules also vary by age: younger children may use generative AI only with help from a teacher or guardian; older students are expected to analyze answers and check information. Copying AI responses for assignments or exams, entering personal data, and letting AI give the final grade are prohibited. The report compares these rules with the voluntary US framework.

To get started, check your school’s rules: which tools are approved, how to verify an answer, and what information should not be entered. The comparison also highlights issues to watch, such as differences in access between regions, surveillance, and the lack of independent studies on learning outcomes. The report says its information was checked in September 2026 and recommends checking the sources because programs and figures may change.
