eventosextremospub — weather alerts become videos with real data
The project turns INMET alerts, NASA satellite images, and Open-Meteo forecasts into 9:16 videos with an animated 3D map, in PT/EN/ES.
eventosextremospub is a set of scripts that turns severe weather alerts into short vertical videos. It brings together INMET alerts, GOES-19 satellite images made available by NASA, and Open-Meteo rain and wind forecasts. The data appears on an animated 3D map, with narration, word-by-word captions, and sources shown on screen. The project also supports the use of a virtual presenter.
For people who create weather content, the project organizes public data into videos for formats such as Reels, Shorts, and TikTok. Its aim is to show where the numbers come from and distinguish what has already happened from what is still a forecast, instead of simply sharing an image from a website. The map can highlight municipalities according to alert level and show satellite images, rain, and wind alongside the narration.
To get started, you need a computer with a graphics card and the tools listed in the project, such as Node with Playwright, Python, and ffmpeg. Narration can be made with the cardshorts project or with a HeyGen avatar. For each edition, check the research and script, make sure each number has a source and time, and review a few frames before assembling the full video.
