Muse and OpenMuse: comparing Meta’s agent with an open alternative
A guide compares Meta’s personal agent Muse with CopilotKit’s open-source alternative and points out errors in the video.
Muse and OpenMuse are personal artificial intelligence agents with their own computer and browser, which users can watch. Muse is made by Meta and runs on a virtual machine in the company’s cloud. OpenMuse, from CopilotKit and licensed under MIT, is an open-source project that runs on a server chosen by the user and is still in alpha.
Both can help with tasks such as handling email and calendars. Muse already offers voice and can make purchases; OpenMuse lets users inspect and change its code, but requires setup. Conversations in OpenMuse pass through the CopilotKit Intelligence service, even when the data is stored on the user’s server.
To get started with OpenMuse, you need to install development tools and obtain a CopilotKit Intelligence key. The project also offers demos with test data. Since it is in alpha, check the repository before installing; the instructions may change. Also note that features such as its own browser, a Linux computer, and live Google connections are optional and require additional setup.
