How to migrate from Claude to Codex (or others) without losing your work

The step by step discussed in the community, with the audit and readback kit.

Migrating from Claude to Codex or another provider means reorganizing the workspace so that knowledge and processes remain useful even when the AI tool changes. The proposal separates a shared core — including context, tasks, decisions, and instructions — from provider-specific files such as CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md.

For users, this helps carry decisions and unfinished tasks across tools and sessions. The suggested workflow records the state of the work in Markdown files that different tools can read. A new session should be able to identify the current goal, the rule in effect, the latest decision, the next step, and the source of the information; simply keeping the files does not guarantee continuity.

The recommended first step is an audit: review what exists, plan the migration, and simulate the changes before modifying files. It also helps to archive unused materials and bring into the context only what is needed. Migration can happen in stages, from direct import to building a durable personal structure with an overview, sources, practical guides, and handoff records between sessions.
