The Codex Cheat Sheet is a guide to using OpenAI Codex CLI as a development agent. It explains the difference between a programming conversation, where the person carries out the suggestions, and an agent, which can operate in the environment to complete tasks. The guide also describes levels of autonomy, from chat to systems with multiple agents.
For Codex users, the change is a move from question-and-answer exchanges to a work process: set a goal, plan, execute, observe the result, make corrections, and validate. The material shows the elements that support this approach, such as AGENTS.md, Skills, MCP, permissions, and automation. It also presents a workflow where planning, decision-making, execution, and validation have their own steps.
The guide is organized into five levels: Getting Started, Everyday Commands, Configuration, Advanced, and Workflows. Beginners can follow that order and pay attention to how instructions and permissions define what the agent can do. The material also connects Codex with Skills shared with Claude Code.
